Following the Impact of the International Sport Connection: Coach Sam Obol Coaching Women's Basketball

Coach Sam Obol first connected with the International Sport Connection when he met Dr. Jens Omli, the ISC Director, through the basketball community in Uganda.  Coach Obol then helped Dr. Omli and others on their trip to Lira, Uganda and worked side-by-side with the Americans in constructing basketball courts at the Lira Integrated Sports Center.  The relationship has grown between Coach Sam and the ISC when he was an assistant instructor for the 2012 ISC Basketball Coach Training Program.

Coach Sam has also had a hand in growing the game of basketball for women and girls in his country.  He coaches for a local university team in Kampala.  They compete in the women’s leagues in the area and they are lead by a coach who cares for them as a mentor and instructs them as a teacher.  ISC Assistant Director, Lisa Berg, visited Coach Sam during one his training sessions.  She was then able to sit down and chat with the woman and girls on the team about their experiences and encourage them to continue their education and their talents.

“It is a pleasure to see every ISC coach active in his or her community.  Coaches like Sam can use their training from the International Sport Connection to teach, train, manage, and mentor the youth players in their area.  Coach Sam has great potential to raise up the next generation of Ugandans.”
