Following the Impact of ISC: Growing the Game for Girls at Jinja Boarding Primary School

International Sport Connection Assistant Director Lisa Berg stepped onto the Army barracks in Jinja, Uganda interested in how she could impact the lives of the children at the Jinja Army Boarding Primary School.  After hearing about the work of the International Sport Connection, the head teacher and the PE teachers invited Coach Lisa Berg and ISC trained coach Majidah Nantanda to their school.  Security escorts took the ISC coaches to the main office that was a few rooms made of md and bricks near a few tall mango trees.  Coach Lisa then met with administrators and teachers at the school. Many children at the residential school are ages 5 through 12 years old.  Most are orphans whose parents died in civil conflicts as well as conflicts around Sub Saharan Africa.

Coach Berg and ISC trained Coach Majidah spoke with hundreds of young girls about using sport to grow their opportunities in the future.  Sport can give these girls a reason to stay in school, it can give them scholarships for schools, it can increase self-confidence, and help keep each girl healthy.

International Sport Connection trained coach and Uganda Women’s National Team Coach Majidah Nantanda also demonstrated important skills that will help the girls develop their abilities and shared her story of overcoming stereotypes and criticism in order to achieve her dreams.  Coach Nantanda was a real live role model for these girls and seeing was believing.

One of the older students explains the impact of the female coaches’ visit to Jinja Boarding Primary School.

“I want to be a coach.  I want to play.  Thank you for visiting our school and showing us what we can be.”
