Following the Impact of the ISC: Growing the Game for Girls Soroti

It was another adventure for the Assistant Director of the International Sport Connection Lisa Berg.  Traveling over washed out land bridges, sweating in 100-degree heat, and traveling 8 hours on public transportation to a village where she didn’t know the language.   Coach Lisa Berg traveled to Soroti, a town in northeastern Uganda.  She was invited to meet coaches, encourage girl players and their coaches to continue developing the sport of soccer, and to choose 30 talented players to tryout for the youth girl’s national soccer team.

Coach Berg met one-on-one with over 200 players and coaches to tell them how they can develop their soccer skills.  She and the Head National Team Coach of Uganda, Majidah Nantanda, worked to put a year-by-year “5 Skills” curriculum together for grassroot improvement of new players in Uganda.  They also are committed to keeping girls in school, empowering them by opening and guiding them through opportunities that fit with their talents, and teaching girls and coaches about healthy life choices.

“Soroti had a surprising amount of talent for being in such a rural place in Uganda.  It is so encouraging to sit down with new teams of girls and encourage them to improve their talent and get an education.  Many times, girls similar to the ones that I met today don’t see a future where education matters.  Telling these girls and their coaches about the importance of school in what ever they may do is very powerful in this part of the country.  I took names of new coaches and talented players and I will do my best to connect them through the network of the International Sport Connection.”
