Assistant Director of the International Sport
Connection, Lisa Berg, visited the local professional team of Jinja and spent
time with the players and coaches. She had met and worked with their head and assistant coaches through previous work with the International Sport Connection. Coach Berg and the team
discussed how dreaming of becoming more than a good soccer player can expand
their impact on their community. In
addition, they shared about the importance of pursuing an education and
becoming literate.
Many players in
Uganda drop out of school with hopes of becoming successful through sport but
they struggle when they get to signing contracts they can’t read and when they
explore other careers. Coach Berg
explained that education together with sports can open opportunities in their
future.
"Sports have the capacity to impact communities and change nations. Sport is a language that translates across any tribe or culture. If we can empower the young adults to become mentors and lead healthy lives they will be ready to bring up the next generation. The follow-up work of the International Sport Connection is to talk to young people about making their futures better for their community instead of just for themselves. This type of servant leadership can change their direction in life."
